Dr. Heck graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree from Auburn University. He graduated from Medical School at the University of South Alabama in Mobile. Dr. Heck completed a General Surgery Internship and his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at the University of Kentucky, College of Medicine in Lexington Kentucky.

Dr. Heck completed a Spine Fellowship at Duke University. In addition to his work at Southern Orthopaedic Surgeons, Dr. Heck is an instructor for NuVasive. He teaches XLIF, a minimally invasive spine surgery, to spine surgeons across the country.
