PRP Used to Fight Signs of Facial Aging

Platelet-rich plasma, commonly known as PRP, is hitting headlines on a regular basis for its many applications in sports injury remedies. Household names like Kobe Bryant and Tiger Woods have both utilized the regenerative powers of PRP to heal from injuries and regain their elite sports status, but that’s not the only transformation that PRP is capable of creating.

There is a new term in the industry called PRP Rejuvenation. This is a cosmetic procedure rather than a sports injury treatment, and it works to reverse signs of aging in the skin by healing the skin from its deepest layers. It has been so successful that PRP is now available at virtually every med-spa, dermatologist, and plastic surgeon office in the country. In fact, according to the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, PRP and hyaluronic acid together generate clinically visible and statistically significant improvement in aging facial skin.

More About PRP Rejuvenation

Platelet-rich plasma is just that: blood plasma that is rich in platelets. It is created from a patient’s own blood when a doctor takes a small vial of blood from the arm, less even than is required for routine blood tests, and places it into a vial to be spun in a centrifuge, which separates out the blood plasma. Through the process of the centrifuge, the number of blood platelets in the plasma becomes about four times more concentrated, earning PRP the nickname “liquid gold.”

Most people think of platelets as the part of the blood responsible for slowing down bleeding in an open wound, but platelets also contain incredibly powerful growth factors and proteins that have immense healing power when unleashed near the site of an injury. This means that when PRP is injected into the skin, the concentrated growth factors and proteins are activated to create collagen. Collagen is the all-important component of the skin and body that is responsible for maintaining bright, smooth, elastic, healthy skin.

After PRP injections, the skin essentially heals itself to reverse sun damage, wrinkles, discoloration, sagginess, and other signs of aging. Men and women who take receive PRP injections report reduced wrinkles and scars, improved tone, and a healthier appearance in general. It’s also significant to note that PRP has been found to prolong the life of other dermal fillers used simultaneously, like hyaluronic acid-based formulas Juvederm and Radiesse.

One study in Turkey followed the effects of PRP Rejuvenation using PRP and hyaluronic acid. Betul Ulusal, MD from Balikesir University in Turkey treated 94 female patients with PRP and HA. The patients then rated their skin texture, sagging, and pigmentation after the treatment, as did three independent physicians. Overall, Ulusal discovered that the women displayed a significant difference in general appearance after PRP Rejuvenation, and the progress became more marked as the number of injections increased.

Ulusal’s study proves what many women have already discovered: PRP injections may just be the aging time machine.
